Tell us about your business:
I’m Jilanne and I run Ocean Admin Solutions. I offer social media management and virtual assistant services to busy female entrepreneurs who love to travel.
I’ve been in business for 2 years now.
Tell us about your family and life outside of your business
I am a first time mum to a 9 month old son. My husband and I love to travel. I’m a New Zealander and he is South African but we met in Florida, USA. Even after our son was born we still love explore new places, just closer to home while he is still young.
Why did you decide to start your business?
My husband, Mark, decided he wanted to go back to South Africa so we packed up everything and moved. I didn’t have a work visa and he worked a rotation, 2 months on, 1 month off – I didn’t want to be stuck working while he was off so I started my business. I loved the freedom of being able to work from anywhere, even while traveling around Africa.
What’s the most challenging thing you’ve faced in your business and how did you overcome it?
I felt isolated and far away from everyone, being all the way in South Africa. But of course the online world is very connected and once I set up social media pages for business and began talking to people, I was able to build relationships and move my business forward.
What’s your biggest business success?
Moving my business internationally – from South Africa to New Zealand -without missing a beat! The beauty of an online business is that you literally can work from anywhere.
What do you love most about being a mama entrepreneur?
I can be at home with my baby. They are only small for so long and I’m so glad I can stay home with him and still have money coming in. I plan to teach my son about entrepreneurship and help him set up his own business too one day!
What advice would you give to other mamas in business?
Just get it out there. Your website or logo may never be perfect but just getting it out there is the main thing. You can always tweak it as you go.
Who’s your business idol? Who is really rocking their business that you look up to and why?
